Skin is made up of many complex substances and structures. Specialized cells, proteins, fluids and more work together to create healthy, supple skin that looks smooth and glowing. In our younger years, our body naturally builds, maintains and produces everything our skin needs to look and feel its best. But as we age — due to a combination of genetics, time and lifestyle factors — these processes slow down and even stop altogether. Signs of aging appear as the skin loses its vitality: wrinkles, sagging, dullness and dark spots are all a product of biological changes in our skin’s makeup.

When it comes to combating these changes, one tactic is to reintroduce some of the essential components of healthy skin through topical treatments or injections. Many skincare products include key ingredients like collagen and elastin or vitamins and minerals that revitalize the skin. Most dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that stores water for skin volume and hydration. And many procedures like skin resurfacing or microdermabrasion are designed to remove old, unhealthy skin cells and promote the body’s natural rejuvenation processes.

What is PRP Therapy?

Many patients are familiar with PRP injections from their infamous nickname, the “vampire facial.” The moniker comes from PRP clients’ appearance post-treatment, which looks as though they have had blood injected into their face. However, this is misleading — although platelet-rich plasma is derived from blood, it is much more nuanced than the name “vampire facial” suggests.

The blood in our body is a combination of cells and fluid. The fluid portion of the blood is called plasma — it is a specialized mixture of water and proteins that includes several important molecules called growth factors. These growth factors promote the production of new cells, proteins and other structures throughout the body.

Platelets are a type of cell found in the blood. They play a role in blood clotting and injury healing. Platelets send signals to the body that promote natural healing and restoration processes, which makes them an asset when it comes to rebuilding skin structures for cosmetic purposes.

In PRP treatments, plasma and platelets are isolated from the rest of the blood using a machine called a centrifuge, which spins quickly and causes dense blood cells to separate from the lighter-weight plasma and small platelets. The remaining platelet-rich plasma can then be injected into the skin in the areas that need to be treated, where the benefits of plasma’s growth factors and platelets’ healing properties can take effect. The growth factors kickstart processes in the skin that may have slowed due to age or environmental damage, such as collagen production or skin cell turnover. Platelets trigger the body’s healing processes, which may include skin cell regeneration or faster nutrient absorption. Together, these benefits can improve skin’s health and appearance for clients with a number of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin sagging and volume loss
  • Dark spots from sun damage or age
  • Hyperpigmentation from acne or other scarring
  • Rough skin texture
  • Dull skin
  • Uneven skin tone

At our practice in Boca Raton, PRP is a common recommendation for patients who want to achieve a beautiful glowing complexion with even tone and texture. It is a gentle and repeatable option that can easily be combined with other procedures or can be scheduled every few months as a regular skin treatment. Dr. Man’s PRP clients enjoy skin that looks and feels refreshed and rejuvenated, with a healthier, more youthful and more vibrant appearance.

The PRP Injection Experience

When you visit our offices for your PRP injections, we will first draw a vial of your own blood to use for your injections. This ensures that your body will recognize the plasma and cells, and that the PRP injected into your body contains nothing that would be harmful to you in particular. After this blood is drawn, it is placed in our specialized centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from other blood structures. Once the PRP is isolated and thoroughly cleaned, it is transferred to a syringe and prepared for injection.

Your provider will carefully map out injection sites on your face, neck or decolletage. We may also combine PRP with microneedling or microdermabrasion instead of choosing selected injection sites, which allows for overall skin rejuvenation for patients with broader concerns. You may receive a topical numbing agent to keep you comfortable during the treatment. Once your injections are complete, you will be free to leave the office and resume your normal daily activities. PRP injection sessions typically last about 30 minutes, depending on the area you are treating.

Recovery From PRP Injection

You will experience some redness and skin sensitivity for two or three days following your procedure. You should avoid makeup, harsh skincare products with scrubs or acidic ingredients (e.g., salicylic acid or glycolic acid), direct sunlight and touching or picking at your skin until all side effects have diminished. We do recommend using gentle cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreen immediately following treatment. You can also use some topical calming creams or ice to reduce redness or bruising at injection sites. None of the visible side effects will impact your ability to participate in typical daily activities, including attending work or exercising.

Dr. Man will provide thorough aftercare instructions to ensure you have a quick recovery and can enjoy your results as soon as possible after treatment. We can work with you to recommend products or techniques best suited to your skin type and your particular treatment plan, particularly if you have sensitive skin. Be sure to discuss any concerns with Dr. Man during your consultation so we can ensure your complete safety and satisfaction throughout the PRP injection process.
