A weak looking chin can cause a man to have a less masculine look to his face. Daniel Man, M.D., a Florida board-certified plastic surgeon, performs chin augmentation on men who want to re-contour the shape of their chin to give them a more defined, stronger facial structure.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is designed to use bone grafts and other firm tissue substitutes implanted on the bone of the chin to create a stronger looking face. Men born with “weaker” looking chins, meaning they tend to be less prominent, strive to have a masculine jawline that frames their face making it appear to be tougher. When men have chin implants, they can change their appearance by sculpting the chin outward from the bone to be more of a focal point of the face.

Another option for men who want more structure to their face but not to the point of requiring invasive surgery includes fat injections, which are sometimes used to force a more prominent facial feature. The fat is harvested from the patient’s own body then injected into the area of the chin that is being sculpted.

Dermal fillers are also used to define and shape the chin and jawline. Fillers such as Voluma®, Restylane®, Perlane®, Hylaform®, Sculptra®, or Radiesse® are injected into the targeted area of the chin and jawline to create the desired appearance.

Benefits of Chin Implants

Male chin implants, also called chin augmentation, give individuals a stronger jawline that provides more structure to a weakened facial appearance.

They also provide other benefits including:

  • Creates a balanced appearance
  • Improve self-esteem
  • Reveals a strong side profile
  • More masculine and appealing appearance

Is Chin Augmentation Right for Me?

If you have a weak chin, recessive jawline, or under projected chin, chin augmentation may be right for you. Men especially, are excellent candidates for chin augmentation to strengthen the appearance of their face and entire demeanor.

How Involved is Chin Augmentation?

Depending on the type of chin augmentation, the procedure is performed under a local or general anesthetic with IV sedation or topical anesthetics used to keep you comfortable. Men typically want more structure, so they are more apt to request full augmentation or enhancement of the chin.

Chin augmentation achieved with bone grafts to reshape the chin takes the longest and requires general anesthesia and/or IV sedation for patient comfort. With this procedure, there is usually a small incision under the chin as well as small incisions inside the mouth. These will be closed with tiny sutures, and the scars should be hidden inside the mouth and in the natural crease under the chin.

How is the Recovery from Chin Augmentation?

After a surgical chin augmentation, the chin will feel numb and sore for several weeks. Swelling may also be experienced but will subside. There may be some bloody drainage from the mouth for the first couple of days if the surgery was performed through the mouth. To help minimize swelling, it is recommended that patients sleep with their head and back elevated. It typically takes 10 to 14 days for all swelling and bruising to diminish, which is about the amount of time for rest.

How Much Does Chin Augmentation Cost?

The cost of male chin implants varies with each patient and is based on the type of chin augmentation performed, the extent of the procedure and whether it is combined with other facial surgery procedures. During a consultation, Dr. Man goes over the costs associated with the procedure as well as payment options and financing.
