What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, sometimes referred to simply as “lipo”, is a cosmetic procedure designed to slim and reshape specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits. This often improves body contours and proportion. Areas of the body which liposuction is performed include:

  • Abdomen and waistline
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Upper arms
  • Inner knee
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest area
  • Chin and cheeks
  • Neck

Liposuction can be performed alone or along with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck. While it is often successful at removing pockets of fat, it isn’t a treatment for obesity, a substitute for healthy diet and exercise, and cannot correct cellulite or loose skin.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most requested cosmetic surgery procedures. Not only is it safe and effective, it can also be done in conjunction with other procedures. Individuals request it so often for the following benefits:

  • Improved appearance
  • Restored self-esteem
  • Targeted fat reduction
  • Reduced recovery compared to other procedures

Is Liposuction Right for Me?

Liposuction is often requested as an alternative for developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle; however, it is not as effective for those who do not make healthy choices in their lives. Instead, liposuction may be right for you if you:

  • Have fat deposits that don’t respond to diet or exercise
  • Are unhappy with the shape of your body due to excess fat
  • Would like a slimmer, flatter stomach, or more shapely buttocks
  • Are within 30 percent of your ideal weight and have firm, elastic skin, and good muscle tone

Because every patient is different, you should discuss your specific hopes, goals, concerns, and expectations with your Boca Raton cosmetic surgeon before making your final decision. If your overall health is good, your expectations are realistic, and your attitude is positive, you are likely a good candidate for a liposuction procedure.

Types of Liposuction?

Dr. Man offers several types of liposuction procedures. Once he determines that liposuction is the recommended treatment to achieve the desired look, he consults with his patients to develop a plan for the procedure. There are several different types of liposuction.

Body Jet™ Liposuction

Body Jet™ liposuction is a new liposuction technique and the first of its kind in the United States. A pioneer in advanced liposuction techniques, Dr. Man assisted in the FDA approval of the Body Jet™ in the United States and his clinical paper “Water-Jet Assisted Liposuction” was published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. This revolutionary alternative to traditional liposuction is gentle, fast, and effective. Using the flow of water to dislodge fat, this technique is not painful, and bruises are minimized.

SmartLipo™

SmartLipo™ is the first and only laser lipolysis system to offer a minimally invasive method to remove fat deposits. SmartLipo™ can be performed under local anesthesia. The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling, and bruising. It also has a quicker recovery time when compared to the conventional liposuction. SmartLipo™ is performed on a special vertical bed, which allows gravity to aid in the process.

Tickle Lipo™

Tickle Lipo™ is the very latest in fat removal and body sculpting surgery. The patented movement of the Tickle Lipo™ cannula enables it to easily glide through the fatty tissue, resulting in better body sculpting, quicker surgery, less bruising, and a faster recovery. Tickle Lipo™ improves the results of traditional liposuction, as it is performed in an in-office environment while the patient is entirely awake, delivering excellent clinical results safely and comfortably.

No matter the technique selected for treatment, the process is the same when performing liposuction:

  • Anesthesia: Medications are administered to ensure patients are comfortable during the surgical procedure. There are typically three choices: local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia. Dr. Man works with an anesthesiologist to determine the best option for each patient.
  • Incisions: Liposuction is performed through very small incisions that allow the cannula to be inserted into the targeted area. Diluted local anesthetic is infused into the area being treated to reduce bleeding and trauma.
  • Suction: The thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The dislodged fat is suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.

How is the Recovery from Liposuction?

Following the procedure, patients can rest comfortably until the anesthesia starts to wear off. Any necessary medications are administered to prevent infection and minimize discomfort. Dr. Man typically follows up to ensure incisions heal properly and the results are satisfactory.

During liposuction recovery, elastic bandages may cover treatment areas to control swelling and compress the skin. Small, temporary drains may be placed to remove any excess blood or fluid. Slight swelling may last a few days to a week; bruising will subside over the following week or so.

The results from liposuction may last longer as long as the patients maintain a healthy diet and exercise. *Patients may request follow-up procedures to tighten loose skin, which is why it is important to maintain a relationship with the surgeon.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

There are several factors involved in the cost of liposuction, including the extent of the areas to be treated and whether other procedures are going to be done in conjunction with liposuction. During an initial consultation, we go over the costs along with our payment options. We accept cash, personal checks, and credit cards, as well as offer financing.
