When it comes to a smooth complexion with very few signs of aging, it is common to seek treatments to help the process. Daniel Man, M.D., a Florida board-certified plastic surgeon, treats people living in Boca Raton, FL, and the surrounding communities with microneedling to boost collagen production in facial skin that is youthful and radiant.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a facial treatment that boosts collagen production by stimulating the skin with a needling device. The device is gently rolled over the targeted area of skin to gently puncture it, creating very small channels so that topical serums can be absorbed into the deep layers of skin. When this happens, it increases collagen production, which increases the skin’s volume and diminishes lines and wrinkles. Microneedling is also used as part of PRP Therapy (LINK). PRP is applied over the tiny skin punctures to penetrate the deep layers of skin and boost the production of collagen.

Benefits of Microneedling

Whether with PRP or another topical serum, microneedling is an excellent skin rejuvenation technique because of the following benefits:

  • Works on all skin types
  • Very little or no discomfort during the treatments
  • Doesn’t scar
  • Minimal or no downtime following each treatment
  • Treats many skin imperfections

Is Microneedling Right for Me?

Microneedling treats all skin types. There are some cautions to consider that may prevent or delay this treatment including open wounds, blood disorders (if using with PRP therapy), pregnancy, current skin infections, and poor wound healing. Dr. Man can make a recommendation regarding microneedling following a consultation.

How Involved is Microneedling?

The in-office treatment starts by cleansing the skin then applying a numbing cream to prevent discomfort. Once that is done, a serum like hyaluronic acid or PRP is applied over the targeted area of the skin. The microneedling device is rolled across the skin so that the serum or PRP can sink into the tiny holes. The growth factors or ingredients in the serum immediately begin to stimulate collagen production and strengthen elastin. Over the course of a few days, the tiny wounds from the device heal and the skin plumps up adding volume and diminishing or erasing any signs of wrinkles, lines, scars or stretch marks.

How is the Recovery from Microneedling?

The recovery from microneeding is short and minimal. The skin develops a slight pinkish tone resembling a sunburn that lasts for about two days. It can be minimized with a light application of mineral makeup. Once this disappears and the tiny punctures heal, the skin begins to look fuller and smoother; however, the full results take several weeks as the collagen must increase to benefit the skin.

It typically takes several treatments to get the most benefit from microneedling. Each treatment is scheduled about four to six weeks apart to allow for healing between them. If microneedling is done for scar removal, it may take as many as six treatments to achieve the goal.

How Much Does Microneedling Cost?

Microneedling varies with each patient in terms of cost. It is based on the extent of treatment needed as well as how many treatments it takes to fully diminish the imperfections. Dr. Man can determine the cost during a consultation in which he evaluates the skin and the area being treated. He can also go over payment options and financing to make the procedure more affordable.
