What are breast implants made of? Breast implants are comprised of a silicon pouch filled with a saline solution (a salt water solution similar in concentration to that found in body tissue). Saline-filled breast implants have been available since the late 1960s. Like most medical devices, they have evolved in both design and manufacture and their popularity continues to increase for women of all ages who desire to increase the size and contour of their breasts. One of the types of implants Dr. Man provides is Mentor high profile saline breast implants.
How do I determine the size of implant I want? Typically a woman will show an example of the size of breasts she desires by giving the surgeon a picture from a magazine. The way to determine what size is best is having the patient and the doctor decide together. Bra sizes are measured in cups, while implants are measured in volume or ccs. In addition, the shape and contour of the implant is also an important consideration in selecting the best size, shape and contour. These considerations, including patient weight, chest circumference, and age, which is figured into a formula which helps the surgeon determine the best implant size based on your goals.
Should I bring my husband or boyfriend to my consultation? It is usually a good idea to involve your family in the decision making process as it can help them understand and become educated.
What are the major risks associated with saline breast implants? Besides deflation there is the risk of capsular contracture -- tightening of natural scar tissue around the implant, which can cause breast firmness. While the ideal of implant surgery is a soft and natural-feeling breast, some degree of firmness will be experienced. Other risks of saline breast implants include the normal risks of any surgical procedure. Excessive bleeding or infection may occur, although this is rare. Infection is usually treatable with antibiotics, but occasionally the implant may need to be removed for a period of time until the infection clears.
Are there other risks? Besides the general risks associated with any surgery, there are concerns associated with breast feeding should you get pregnant, and mammography, since there is the possibility that the implant may interfere with the early detection of breast cancer. These concerns should be discussed with your doctor prior to your surgery.
